Ian Beniston
Description
Ianâs career as a professional potter and ceramic artist spans 42 years. Predominantly self-taught, Ian began working with clay in his home country New Zealand in 1981 before relocating to Western Australia in 1986. His work explores the important intersection and marriage between the form and the glaze, with a particular focus on the bold use of colour, texture and clean lines. His fascination with the technical and alchemical aspects of glaze development is central to his process. Ian primarily works with porcelaneous stoneware and porcelain, fired in gas kilns under both reduction and oxidation environments. Most pieces are wheel thrown, though Ian also uses hand pressing and sculping techniques and incorporates other materials into his work including bamboo and metal.
